Job Description

General Summary: A full-time position responsible for all aspects of order and specimen receipt and handling in preparation for clinical testing. The position will only perform duties relating to specimen and order handling as authorized by the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager, Shift Supervisor and/or Processing Supervisor that are within the individual's skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

 Essential Job Responsibilities:

 Follows laboratory policies and procedures for specimen and order handling and processing ensuring proper documentation and document retention

  • Manages and maintains new and recurring patient orders in the Copia and Harvest LIS systems including entering/updating all demographic, insurance, testing request and other patient information provided by ordering providers and practices

  • Evaluates specimens for acceptability based on test-specific collection and transport and specimen labeling requirements

  • Evaluates all patient orders for accuracy and completeness as compared to all accompanying documentation

  • Takes appropriate action when specimens are identified as being unacceptable for testing or accompanying documentation is incomplete or contradictory

  • Works closely with shift technicians and technologists ensuring open lines of communication regarding received specimens and documentation

  • Works closely with specimen couriers in receipt and documentation of specimens

  • Participates in customer service and client communication by reporting issues encountered when registering/reviewing orders and evaluating specimens to the Processing Supervisor for documentation

  • Assists shift technicians and technologists in extra duties as assigned within skill and education levels

  • Adheres to all laboratory safety policies including use of personal protective equipment and biohazardous material handling and disposal

  • Maintains patient confidentiality as required by HIPAA

Job Requirements

Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent

Experience: Phlebotomy/Specimen handling experience preferred but not required
